CIE philosophy and approach

Cambridge believes in building students that develop subject knowledge and conceptual understanding, and establish a broad range of skills, learning habits and attributes to help make them ready for the world.

This key phrase is the cornerstone of the Cambridge approach: CIE believes education works best when curriculum, teaching, learning, resources and assessment are closely aligned. That belief inspires the design of each aspect of Cambridge programmes.

Alignment stems from knowing what Cambridge want students to learn (from the top down, that is from university to the classroom), understanding when the learning has happened, and encouraging teaching and learning approaches that support it.

Five elements lie at the heart of a Cambridge education: international curriculum, teaching and learning, assessment, international recognition and global community.

The Cambridge student

Cambridge students develop an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. They also gain the essential skills they need for success at university and in their future careers. A Cambridge International education helps students become confident, responsible, reflective, adaptable and engaged, qualities called the “Cambridge learner attributes”, which are built into every course offered in the programme.

These five powerful and highly desirable learning habits inspire students to love learning and help them to lead fulfilled and successful lives. Students who demonstrate these attributes are able to skilfully employ a broad range of cognitive and socio-emotional skills (including personality qualities such as resilience, self-motivation and self-regulation) towards effectively managing their performance.

Cambridge students are ready to tackle the demands of tomorrow’s world, capable of shaping a better world for the future.
