St Cyprian’s School launches its inaugural Giving Day: Her Future Rising
As part of its inaugural Giving Day- Her Future Rising campaign, St Cyprian’s School is shining the spotlight on Umthombo Wolwazi Satellite School, a community-based education initiative designed to expand opportunity for girls beyond St Cyprian’s and contribute to stronger educational outcomes across Cape Town.

The programme reflects a belief that quality education has the power to transform lives, families and communities. Through partnerships with four neighbouring schools in the Cape Town City Bowl - Cape Town High School, Good Hope Seminary High School, Harold Cressy High School and Trafalgar High School, Umthombo Wolwazi seeks to strengthen the STEM education pipeline for young women (Grade 10-12 students) by providing targeted, high-impact academic support and learning opportunities.
At its heart, Umthombo Wolwazi is about educational equity. The initiative recognises that many talented young women face barriers to accessing the academic support and resources needed to pursue tertiary education and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. By investing in skills development, academic enrichment and pathways to higher education, the programme aims to help more girls realise their potential and access opportunities that may otherwise remain out of reach.

Principal Shelley Frayne echoes the importance of education of the girl child, stating that it creates ripple effects beyond the classroom.
“When young women are equipped with knowledge and opportunity, they are empowered to contribute meaningfully to their communities and to South Africa’s future. Umthombo Wolwazi is an investment in that future”, says Frayne.
One of the three initiatives supported through Giving Day, Umthombo Wolwazi reflects St Cyprian’s commitment to being an active partner in creating broader educational opportunity. The programme is rooted in collaboration, sharing expertise and creating pathways that enable girls from neighbouring schools to thrive academically and pursue further studies.
As part of the Giving Day: Her Future Rising campaign, St Cyprian’s School is making a bold step to raise R3 million in 36 hours through a school wide phonathon. As the first girl’s school in the region to undertake this initiative, funds raised will go towards three initiatives aimed to support the school and its students present and future.

One Girl at a Time Endowment Fund seeks to ensure that through scholarships and bursaries, a St Cyprian's education remains accessible to talented young women for generations to come. The Build Beyond Today Fund is a campus development campaign investing in future focused facilities and Umthombo Wolwazi Satellite School programme works to expand access to quality education into a wider community.
Giving Day invites the wider community to play a role in this vision. Every contribution will help strengthen a programme that seeks not only to support individual students, but also contribute to long-term, positive outcomes for girl’s education in the region. Through collective action and community partnership, donors and supporters become part of a shared effort to ensure that more young women have access to the tools, opportunities and encouragement they need to shape their own futures.
As St Cyprian’s celebrates 155 years of educating young women, Umthombo Wolwazi represents an important extension of that legacy. It recognises that the future of girls’ education is strengthened when schools, communities and supporters work together to expand opportunity for all.
