Community Partnerships
Community Partnership work at St Cyprian’s School aims to sensitize our learners to various national (and international) issues like poverty, cruelty to animals, hunger, HIV/AIDS, homelessness, and others. This awareness begins at the School-in-the-Woods, and is nurtured in different ways throughout the school with High School girls being more ‘hands on’ and engaged in giving time and energy. Also key to the Programme is educating our girls to recognise the dignity of everybody, use appropriate language and engage in good processes. All St Cyprian’s learners will find themselves involved in this Programme in many different ways throughout their school years. There are whole school opportunities, grade projects, class activities, alternate education programmes, Integrated Programmes, weekly visits to places and many other times when they can sign up voluntarily for different events.
More formally, Grade 6s and 7s can sign up for the Preparatory School Challenge, Grades 8 and 9s have the opportunity to get involved in the Community Challenge of a minimum number of hours per year, Grade 10s all do 20 hours at a community project of their choice for the Citizenship Section of the Life Orientation Syllabus. Learners can also sign up for the President’s Award throughout the High School, and this has a healthy component of Community Partnership work.
Annual events include Africa Day Food Challenge, Spare Change Campaign, Soccer Day, World Book Day, Winter Woollies Day, Blisters for Bread Walk and others. Then there are weekly events like sandwich making, and there are visits to a school aftercare and also a children’s hospital, an in-house community club, blood donating and many others one-off opportunities.
