ART & DESIGN
Art is an important part of the holistic educational approach on which St Cyprian’s School prides itself.Art is introduced in the Preparatory School and is compulsory up to Grade 8. In Grade 9 it is a major component of Arts & Culture. Both Visual Art and Design are offered at the FET stage.
Preparatory School
Art is taught by a specialist Art teacher. The girls experience drawing, painting and three-dimensional art in a variety of media, exploring the excitement of colour, the rhythm of pattern and the wonder of design. Even at these early stages, the girls are encouraged to develop their individual ways of interpreting and expressing their own ideas.
Girls also study Design & Technology as a separate subject.
High School
Arts & Culture is a compulsory subject in Grades 8 & 9.
In Grade 8 all learners experience Art, Drama and Music.
In Grade 9 the learners choose 2 options from Art, Design, Music and Drama.
Grades 10–12
Visual Art and Design are both available as Matric subjects.
Both subjects have Practical and Theory components. In Grade12 Practical work is examined in the form of an exhibition; Theory is a 3-hour written examination.
The practical programme that learners follow will naturally change with the specialist skills/orientation of the teacher at the time. However, girls will:
• be exposed to visual elements & principles (composition, colour, line, perspective)
• develop their technical skills (drawing skills, construction methods, various creative processes)
• experiment with a range of media (paint, charcoal, print techniques)
• make 2-D and 3-D work
• be encouraged to be visually literate and articulate
• think conceptually and creatively.
Visual Art begins with a focus on drawing and painting skills; these skills are built from Grade 8 through to Grade 10. In Grades 11 and 12 learners are able to experiment conceptually and respond to projects with their chosen medium of focus.
Design focuses on responding to a design brief, following the design process and the creation of products. Learners cover basic 2-D and 3-D design. With the acquired hand and research skills, Grade 12s can specialise in their chosen area of interest.
